Pen tablets at USE: ‘The story behind the equation’

The pen tablet is gaining popularity. At USE the tablets are already used by more than 20 professors for courses of the first bachelor year. These courses - Microeconomics, Institutions and Welfare en Mathematics for Economists – are profiting from the use of the tablets, for instance because of the possibility to write down equations. Added value is that students can directly give their feedback on what has been written down. Marly Celis (USE) shares: ‘In my case, the use of the pen tablet has been incredibly helpful. During tutorials, I often have to write down equations and do some algebra. Thus using the tablet allows me to set up a question from the beginning and solve it step by step along with the students. It allows for a bit more of interaction because the students follow "the story behind the equation." While this doesn't replace the in-person teaching tutorials, it does provide a sense of closeness. I have found some challenges as well. For instance, it took me a while until I found a proper setup for my handwriting to be more understandable. By this, I mean that the tablet allows for adjusting pressure, output-pressure relation, mapping on the screen, managing monitors (if it is the case). Although my opinion of the tablets is quite positive, I'm not sure if the students have found it useful or at least the good alternative for the online teaching format. ‘ Also Stefan Vukojevic (USE) worked with the pen tablets: ‘I have similar impressions as Marly. The tablets have proven to be quite useful and I think they definitely help students to follow the train of thought. Alternative to them is just showing them slides and doing calculations in slides, which makes the tutorial too static.’
